Yahoo!’s Cloud Recognized in Greenpeace Report
Posted: 10th of May, 2012Receives highest Clean Energy score amongst peers
Greenpeace International recently issued a report titled “How Clean is Your Cloud?” Aiming to uncover the energy choices of the largest IT companies in the race to build the cloud, Greenpeace found that Yahoo!, Google and Facebook are leading the way by moving toward powering clouds with clean energy.
Yahoo! received the highest Clean Energy Index score amongst our peers, at 56.4% (Google’s score was 39.4% and Facebook came in at 36.4%), which was not lost on NPR who noted that we were the “only major Internet company in the study to get most of its electricity from renewable or clean energy sources.”
Greenpeace specifically noted Yahoo!’s environmental responsibility in the areas of site location decision-making and energy efficiency. The report highlighted Yahoo!’s leadership in building some of the world’s most efficient facilities.
When Yahoo! identifies sites for our data centers, we take into account the presence of clean power, great workforces, and weather conditions. One of the reasons we love Lockport, New York so much is it was the perfect location for our unique “chicken coop” design. The temperate climate there lets us run the data center almost entirely on free cooling. The result is a data center that consumes 40 percent less electricity and 90 percent less water than a conventional data center. We’re now duplicating that design in our Quincy, Washington location. As the report comments, we at Yahoo! are in a great position to help move the industry towards a clean and efficient energy future.
In addition to the recognition in the Greenpeace report, the Uptime Institute named Yahoo! a finalist in the Facility Design Implementation category of its 2012 Green Enterprise IT Awards, which recognize pioneering advancements for significantly improved energy productivity in IT and data center operations.

Blake Irving Shares His Vision with the SF Chronicle
Posted: 13th of February, 2012Quoted from the SF Chronicle article:
Two years ago, Blake Irving had more time to spend mornings surfing on the Malibu coast. That was before Yahoo's then-Chief Executive Officer Carol Bartz lured him back into the corporate world, as chief product officer of the Sunnyvale company.
Now the industry veteran stands at the center of the efforts to turn around the struggling Internet pioneer.
For months, the public chatter surrounding Yahoo has focused on executive turnover and exploration of its "strategic options." Those themes continued last week with the departure of four more board members - following Bartz and co-founder Jerry Yang out the door - and the emergence of details about how the company might unload its lucrative stakes in Alibaba Group and Yahoo Japan.
But the real war in the technology space begins and ends with products. Without new ways of drawing users and advertisers, the rest won't add up to much.
That's where Irving comes in. He helped Microsoft build its vast online operations as vice president of the software giant's Windows Live Platform group, before becoming a business professor at Pepperdine University in Malibu.
In an interview with The Chronicle, he laid out his vision for creating "deeply personal digital experiences" that deliver on five points: personal relevance through science and data; premium user experiences; a mobile-first mind-set; social features that better resemble how we interact in the real world; and an "ecosystem" that allows other companies to work within Yahoo's tools...

Getting to Know Yahoo!'s New CEO
Posted: 7th of May, 2012What a way to start 2012! After an intensive four-month search, Yahoo! has named Scott Thompson as chief executive officer. Thompson comes to Yahoo! from eBay’s PayPal unit, where he served as president of the leading online-payment site since 2008. The tech guru has also served as the chief information officer for Barclays Global Investors and Visa Inc.’s Inovant. He plans to apply his dedication to innovation, speed, and discipline to carry Yahoo!, the premier digital media company, into the new year. In Thompson’s own words: “I cannot wait to get started.”
Here are six fun facts to keep you up to speed on the new CEO.
- The 54-year-old New Englander hails from the small town of Raynham, near the south shore of Massachusetts. He’s a die-hard fan of all things related to Boston sports. Listen closely for his distinct Boston accent, which the Wall Street Journal calls “the best New England accent in corporate America since Jack Welch.”

- Thompson is a proud graduate of Stonehill College, a small private Catholic school in Easton, Massachusetts, where he holds a bachelor’s degree in accounting and computer science. “A lot of things form the basis of who you are,” Thompson said in an interview, “and I give Stonehill the appropriate amount of credit for helping shape me along the way.”
- The left-handed Silicon Valley resident is married with two sons and a daughter.
- Thompson was the recipient of the 2011 Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award.

Yahoo! 2011 Year in Review
Posted: 6th of December, 2011Year in Review 2011 is here! This year’s edition marks the 10th anniversary of Yahoo!’s highly-anticipated annual look-back that identifies the top stories and trends of the year based on nearly 700 million monthly unique visitors’ activity on the network and billions of consumer searches.
The top search term of 2011 didn’t go to a person or a news event, but to a technological marvel. The iPhone led the 2011 search queries, bypassing a reality TV star’s marriage and pending divorce, a notorious criminal defendant, and America’s most wanted terrorist.
Fueled by news that Apple co-founder Steve Jobs had stepped down as CEO in August, and then that he had passed away in October, searches for Steve Jobs skyrocketed on Yahoo!. By their nature, breaking news stories don’t always crack the Top 10 list. People don’t have to search for details they get in the news, and it’s rare that a news story ends up on the overall list. Yet this year, Casey Anthony, Osama bin Laden, and the Japanese earthquake and tsunami all figured into the top ranking.”

Yahoo! HQ Campus Awarded LEED® Gold Green Building Certification
Posted: 25th of October, 2011Article originally posted on Yodel Anecdotal.
Yahoo! Goes Green
Last Wednesday, Yahoo’s in Sunnyvale celebrated the dedication of the new LEED ® Gold Plaque for our Headquarters Campus, the launch of a pilot Plug-in Hybrid Vehicle carsharing program, and the annual Green Team Summer Fair!
Green Buildings turn into Gold!
We were thrilled to celebrate the news that Yahoo!’s entire headquarters campus has been awarded LEED ® Gold certification under the US Green Building Council’s standards for Existing Buildings: Operations + Maintenance. Yahoo! was further honored to receive the first LEED ® Gold designation ever given to a multi-building office campus under this standard.
What does this mean? It means that our Sunnyvale campus ranks among the top tier of buildings which make smart use of energy, water, natural gas, and other resources. Our offices have been retrofitted to improve indoor lighting and air quality, and purchases of electronic equipment, furniture, cleaning supplies, and food were monitored to ensure compliance with LEED® standards for local purchases, re-use, and recycling. The project to certify the entire campus took two years and included assessments of everything from the ground floor walk-off mats to the air filters on the roofs. The investments made have already paid for themselves in terms of efficiency, and we know we did the right thing for Yahoos and for the environment.
WeCar Carsharing Program Pilots Plug-in Hybrid Vehicles
Yahoo! offers the WeCar carsharing program in Sunnyvale and Santa Clara, which enables employees to rent vehicles by the hour for day-time errands and trips. This month, Enterprise and Toyota have placed a pilot pre-release Plug-in Hybrid Prius at Yahoo! headquarters. From August through December 2011, Yahoos will be able to check out the Plug-In Hybrid Prius for personal use through the WeCar program. Cool!
Green Team Summer Fair
And, to round out the excitement, last week, the Yahoo! Green Team hosted their 2011 annual Green Team Summer Fair in Sunnyvale, featuring local environmental organizations and spreading the word about our new office compost program.

When the Royals Wed, Yahoo! Broke Records!
Posted: 12th of October, 2011With robust coverage including original articles and blogs, photo galleries, videos, and a digital guestbook enabling well-wishers worldwide to offer their advice to the couple, Yahoo! became the place the world turned to for programming surrounding the Royal Wedding.
Audience figures show that Yahoo!’s overall traffic surpassed expectations and broke records, driving more traffic and video streams to its coverage of the wedding than any previous event. Preliminary internal data shows that Yahoo! sites serving Royal Wedding content drove 400 million page views on Friday. Additionally Yahoo! delivered Royal Wedding content at a record-breaking 50,000 requests per second on Friday, seven times the average daily peak of approximately 7,500, and video traffic was 21 percent higher than the previous record. Interest in the Royal Wedding was so high that Yahoo! broke bandwidth records before Kate Middleton even stepped out of the car at Westminster Abbey.
According to Yahoo!’s internal data, Yahoo!’s Royal Wedding site (royalwedding.yahoo.com), hosted on Yahoo! Shine, the leading site for women’s lifestyle content , generated 65 million unique pageviews on April 29 and April 30, with 6.6 million unique visitors the day of the wedding and 8.6 millions unique visitors the day after. Engagement with the site was high, with users spending a total of 112 million minutes over those two days combined.
Yahoo!’s homepage recorded 32 million clicks to Royal Wedding coverage on April 29, a new one-day record for a single news event, and 52 million clicks from April 29 through May 1, a three-day record for a single news event.
Yahoo! Shine as a whole set traffic records on Thursday, April 28, then broke them again on Friday and Saturday, generating 80 million combined pageviews over the two days, with 8.7 million unique visitors on Friday and 9.4 million unique visitors on Saturday. Users spent a total of 141.7 million minutes on Shine over the two days.
Yahoo!’s total Royal Wedding video audience figures eclipsed the previous record – Michael Jackson’s funeral – by 21 percent especially impressive given that this event happened during non-peak hours.
Most clicked stories:
Yahoo!’s original content on the Royal Wedding performed incredibly well, providing users instant access to everything they wanted to know with Yahoo!’s unique voice and interesting analysis. A team of industry-leading writers and editors wrote and featured fascinating stories that really clicked with users on Yahoo!’s homepage. Pippa Middleton, Kate’s younger sister and maid of honor, quickly became the breakout star of the wedding, and led coverage with the top two most-clicked stories. Yahoo!’s top five Royal Wedding stories included:
All eyes turn to Kate’s sister (6.7 million clicks)
Kate’s sister wears surprising white dress (6.1 million clicks)
Who is the frowning girl in the royal kiss photo? (5.3 million clicks)
Kate debuts stunning evening dress (5.1 million clicks)
Kate Middleton’s dress wows spectators (4.6 million clicks)
The Royal Wedding Yahoo! Guestbook:
The Royal Wedding Yahoo! Guestbook provided users the opportunity to offer their marital advice and best wishes to Prince William and Kate Middleton, then share those wishes with users’ social networks. The guestbook received more than 300,000 comments from users in 194 countries. The most common advice, across all the regions, centered on three themes: be good to each other, communicate openly and never go to bed angry.
Yahoo! searches during the Royal Wedding:
Audiences have been visiting Yahoo! for daily updates since Prince William and Kate Middleton’s engagement was announced, seeking the most interesting stories or answers to a wide range of questions about all aspects of the Royal Wedding.
On the day of the wedding, amidst all the pomp and circumstance, people turned to Yahoo! for answers to their many questions — including figuring out what “pomp and circumstance” was. Some of the questions people asked on Yahoo! included:
What does Pippa mean?
What does Prince William do?
What is a fascinator?
What religion is Prince William?
Did Kate Middleton meet Princess Diana?
What is a duchess? What is a royal duke?
Was Diana a commoner?
Who was invited to the wedding? Who wasn’t invited to the wedding?
The day-of searches on Yahoo! centered mostly around Kate: her shoes, dress, tiara, and the lace on her dress. Interest in Prince Harry and Pippa Middleton also surged on the wedding day. All week leading up to the ceremony, Prince Harry searches on Yahoo! surpassed those of groom Prince William. Aside from the royal wedding party, Yahoo! saw Americans’ interest focus on Sarah Burton, designer of the now-famous wedding gown, the hats worn to the wedding (searches for “royal wedding hats” spiked 4291percent on the day of the wedding), and the ladies sporting the fanciest hats: Princess Beatrice spiked 2333 percent on the day of the wedding and Princess Eugenie spiked 1474 percent. Hat designer Phillip Treacy spiked as well.
In the days following the wedding, the attention turned from Kate and according to searches on Yahoo!, Pippa Middleton became the star of the show. Searches on Yahoo! for Pippa were 11 percent higher than for Kate (looking at searches for April 29 and 30th). Searches for “Pippa Middleton” were also significantly higher than “Prince William” and “Prince Harry.” Specifically, people wanted to know about her age, weight and height, and see her dress. Another lady casting a shadow on Princess Kate was Princess Grace — searches for “Princess Grace Wedding Dress” spiked 5680 percent the day of the wedding on Yahoo!, as commentators drew comparisons to Kate’s dress.
As expected, users wanted to see photos. On Yahoo!, searches for “royal wedding pictures” and “royal wedding photos” spiked more than 5263 percent.
Flickr from Yahoo!:
Through The British Monarchy’s official photostream on Flickr from Yahoo!, one of the world’s best places to post and share photos, the royal family has given people across the globe an inside look into the Royal Wedding over the past few months, from wedding invitations, wedding cake designs and the official wedding pictures taken by the happy couple’s photographer. In total, there have been more than 45 million views of the British Monarchy photostream and pictures on Flickr. The top five photos viewed on The British Monarchy’s official photostream include:
The official Royal Wedding photographs (The Bride and Groom with attendants) – 1.08 million views
The official Royal Wedding photographs (The Royal Wedding Group) – 1.07 million views
The official Royal Wedding photographs (The Bride and Groom) – 810,000 views
The Royal Wedding Cake – 447,000 views
The Service (Prince William and Catherine Middleton leaving Westminster Abbey following the ceremony) – 440,000 views
